    A Few Reminders...

If you have a new computer:

    • Be sure to activate the antivirus application immediately!

    • If your new computer is more than *90 days old, or
if you have not paid for a subscription within the last year,
your antivirus application is out-of-date and you are not protected
More details on this issue in the 0302 newsletter.

    * Many new computers come with a 90-day free trial version, but after that period you must pay to renew the subscription.  Wonder if your antivirus is up-to-date?  Click here

    Winter has arrived!

    A (Slightly) New Look

It's not drastically different; we have an index at the top and the look is softer but operationally it's the same.  We will, as time allows, experiment with other features and capabilities of the browsers, but probably nothing to extreme.

You may notice the page is now an "asp" page, not HTM(L)  This simply gives us more flexibility in programming the page, for example.. one thing we are experimenting with is a monthly survey

    Wireless Printers

We've installed a couple of these and they work very nicely but if you have a software firewall, be prepared to reconfigure it.  Perhaps the easiest way is to disable the firewall before installing the software then reboot the computer, run a test page and respond to the firewall warnings.

Typically the firewall will indicate filename is attempting to access the network.  Respond by "always" allowing that particular program access but be careful!

Make sure the program attempting network access is part of the printer software package.  If you're not sure, disallow access for now, record the filename and do some research!

    Internet Tax

The (very controversial) Internet service tax ban has apparently been extended for another three years and the President is expected to sign the bill.  The ban was originally put in place in 1998 to promote Internet growth and keep tax hungry states at bay.

    Please Don't Fall for These

More and more, email/spam messages are getting by spam filters.  Some of these appear to be from credit card companies asking you to verify information, a.k.a. phishing.  DO NOT respond to these!  Here is a recent one:

    Dear Customer:
Recently there have been a large number of cyber attacks pointing our database servers. In order to safeguard your account, we require you to sign on immediately.
This personal check is requested of you as a precautionary measure and to ensure yourselves that everything is normal with your balance and personal information.
This process is mandatory, and if you did not sign on within the nearest time your account may be subject to temporary suspension.
Please make sure you have your Citibank(R) debit card number and your User ID and Password at hand.
Please use our secure counter server to indicate that you have signed on, please click the link bellow:
    http://218.7.120.81/scripts/
!! Note that we have no particular indications that your details have been compromised in any way.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter and thank you for using Citibank(R)
    Regards,
    Citibank(R) Card Department
(C)2004 Citibank. Citibank, N.A., Citibank, F.S.B., Citibank (West), FSB. Member FDIC.Citibank and Arc Design is a registered service mark of Citicorp.

A few of clues this is a scam:

    • Sure, on occasion we have typos in our newsletter but one would think Citibank would check their document and not spell "below" with two L's.
    • The message indicates the server is secure but if so, it should be https://...
    • It does not indicate Citibank but instead points you to an unnamed server of 218.7.120.81.

Besides, if your credit card company uses email for this kind of correspondence, drop them and run the other way!  If there is a problem, they will call.  Even then, be very careful before you give out ANY information!  If they do call, get the person's name and extension number and say you will call back, then use the phone number found on your credit card!!!

More information on Identity Theft, click here.   More on the scam, click here.  Think you know the difference between legitimate and phishing schemes?  Take a test, click here

    An (apparent) Recent Phone Scam

We address this one without confirmation but it sounds like it would work on a lot of people:  Basically you get a call claiming the person is from the "Fraud Prevention..." of your credit card and they want to make sure you have possession of your card.  They then ask you to confirm you have possession  by reading them security number from the back of the card.

DO NOT READ IT TO THEM!  See highlighted above.

Vast Majority of Problems We See

Each week we see computers that have a slow Internet or the Internet simply does not work even though the connection is established.  Ninety percent of these problems are due to Internet Hijacking and more times than not, the cause is by installing a toolbar, searchbar or some other add-on.

Hijacking can be difficult to resolve.  First thing to try is deleting then recreating the dialup connection to the provider.  If that does not help, try uninstalling then reinstalling the network protocols via the Add/Remove Programs - Windows Components.

Next is to "remove" all unknown or damaged items found in the Windows\Downloaded Program Files folder.  From there, it's going to require spyware removal tools and/or registry repair tools.

Having Odd/Erratic Problems with Some Sites?

Delete the temporary Internet files via Tools menu > Internet Options.  Place a check mark for the "off-line" contents as well.

You Don't Have it so Bad

Bill Gates, Microsoft's chairman, gets 4 million emails a day and is probably the most spammed person in the world, according to his Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer.

Spam emails are believed to account for over 80 percent of Internet traffic.

    Support Options

If you have problems with certain applications, a quick visit to the manufacturer's support site may help you resolve the problem.  Unfortunately these sites are sometimes poorly maintained and have little to no information or they are simply overwhelming.  Many times we find searching Google results in more information than the manufacturer's support site.

Still not finding an answer?  Try searching the newsgroups.  To set up the Microsoft newsgroup, see our Jun '03 newsletter  Once setup, here are some hints and ideas how to post questions.

    Popup Blockers

As we discussed awhile back, popup blockers will interfere with McAfee updates.  This may include the Windows SP2.  Anyone using McAfee should force an update and if updates are available, test then retest for proper installation.  If it does not seem to succeed, add www.mcafee.com to the allowable popup list (IE Tools menu > Popup settings.)  Pogo.com players may have the same issue...

    Speel Spell Checker

Is Outlook/Outlook Express checking your email message spelling?  If not, check the settings:

Tools menu > Options > Spelling (tab)

Both Outlook and Outlook Express require Microsoft Office, or at least Microsoft Word, to spell check and even then; not all versions of Word will load spell checker for email.  Older versions of Works that included Word may not load the checker as a global applet

So now what?  You could of course purchase Word or Office or you could search the Internet for an add-on spell checker.  However, these add-ons are typically not integrated and are cumbersome to use. Microsoft Knowledgebase link for this problem with Microsoft Works loaded.

When Should You Replace a Computer?

Sooner or later you must call it quits on repairing old equipment.  Like a trusty old car, sometimes it's hard to make the decision to replace, but unlike a car, computer prices have dropped, significantly.  Today's $500 computer is more stable, many times faster and all around better than the thousand dollar machines of just a few years ago.

Businesses shouldn't have too much trouble deciding.  Just calculate payroll hours lost due to computer problems against the price of a new one and in no time at all, you could replace a computer.

Obviously if you have some high end hardware in the computer the decision is harder but on the other hand, that hardware can probably be move to a new computer.  But you may want to check first so here are the Windows XP hardware and application compatibility links.

Some things that should make you seriously think about a new computer:

    • If you are running Windows 95 or earlier.
      • If the computer is that old, replace it - period!
    • If you are having read or write errors involving the C: drive.
    • If the hard drive is making a "clicking" noise.
    • If you have having unpredictable lock-up problems or blue screens.
      • Formatting the drive and reinstalling everything may resolve this, but here too, how much time should you invest in that old machine?
    • If you try to install a new application but are informed there is not enough memory or not enough disk space.  Click here for more information.

    or

    • If you have irreplaceable data such as photos and the computer is four years old or more.  Note: If you have irreplaceable data, regardless of the computer's age, you should be doing backups.

So if you're having problems with your current machine or it's getting upward of four-five years old, you really should consider replacing it! With prices less than $500 for a new machine, it makes little sense to hold on to/repair an older one.

Exactly What Will You Pay For?

To get the price lower, many computer companies are offering "trial versions" of different software but when the trial version is over you must pay additional money to renew the application.  Remember to add that amount back in to the original cost.  NOTE: If the trial application is MS Office Professional the renewal will likely be over $400!

A more dangerous "trial version" is the antivirus application.  If the notice to renew is ignored and the trial period expires, the computer is not protected.

    Warranty:

You should certainly get one year support at no additional charge, but should you get the extended warranty?  If a laptop, it may be worthwhile as long as that coverage includes damage.  Before you buy an extended warranty consider this: you will likely be replacing the computer in four or five years.

    HP Photo Printers

Recently we were involved in resolving an issue with two different HP PhotoSmart printers on the same computer.  Installing one would wipe out the HP director from the other installation.  After some unsuccessful experimenting we wrote HP.

    Their response was somewhat expected:

I am sorry to inform you that the HP PSC 2410 all-in-one does not support multiple installations along with another Photosmart printer. I regret for the inconvenience this might cause you.

When more than one HP Photosmart device is used on the same system, incompatibility issues will probably be encountered. HP does not recommend using more than one HP Photosmart device on the same computer.

I'll be in trouble for this one but here it is anyway...

Once upon a time, a perfect man met a perfect woman and they had a perfect courtship, followed by a perfect wedding. Their life together was, of course, perfect. One snowy Christmas Eve, our perfect couple was driving their perfect car along a winding road when they noticed someone in distress off the road. Being perfect, they stopped to help. There stood Santa Claus with his huge bundle of toys. Not wanting to disappoint any children on Christmas, the perfect couple loaded Santa and his toys into their vehicle and started delivering his toys. But driving conditions deteriorated and our perfect couple (and Santa) had an accident. Only one survived. Question: Which one survived? ...

Answer: The perfect woman survived. She's the only one who existed in the first place because everyone knows there is no Santa Claus and no perfect man.

Women should stop reading here.  Men only keep reading:

So if there is no perfect man and no Santa Claus, the woman must have been driving. This explains the accident.

By the way, if you're a woman and you're still reading, this proves another point: Women never listen!

Hey, don't blame me for these, let Al Lowe know
