    Google Search

Google has implemented a new feature where you can type someone's phone number into the search bar and hit enter and then you will be given a map to their house.  Very handy indeed but this also has a potential personal security issue.

You can opt-out by clicking on "Phonebook results for..." and then click on "Phonebook removal form".  Fill out the form then submit.

But should you be concerned?  Perhaps a little but how many sites are you going to visit and opt-out of?

There are hundreds of other search tools that will results with the same information.  Most phone companies offer some sort of on-line lookup but the daddy of all, AT&T offers a nation wide lookup:  http://www.tollfree.att.net/rl.html

    Travel with your Laptop?

Many laptops are normally part of another network; at home for example, you may "share" certain folders or resources.  If your security and firewall are properly configured sharing is just fine but sharing resources when you travel is another story!

Turn off all sharing before you travel.  From the Control Panel's Networking icon; open the wireless network connection Properties then:

    • Windows 98/ME users: Click the File and Printer Sharing button and clear the check marks.  "OK" your way out and reboot the computer. Microsoft's Article.
    • Windows 2000 and XP users: Simply uncheck the File and Printer sharing option then "OK" your way out.  Microsoft's Article.

Why are we mentioning this?  Click for information on "Evil Twin" Networks

    ID Theft

Old news well worth repeating!  As discussed last December, Identity Theft is a major problem and is far more devastating than viruses, although ID theft is typically the end result of a virus!

Last year, identity theft was a $548 million dollar business, much of it via Internet auction fraud.  From the FBI's Internet Auction Fraud Prevention page:

    • Understand as much as possible about how the auction works, what your obligations are as a buyer, and what the seller’s obligations are before you bid.
    • Find out what actions the web site/company takes if a problem occurs and consider insuring the transaction and shipment.
    • Learn as much as possible about the seller, especially if the only information you have is an e-mail address. If it is a business, check the Better Business Bureau where the seller/business is located.
    • Examine the feedback on the seller.
    • Determine what method of payment the seller is asking from the buyer and where he/she is asking to send payment.
    • If a problem occurs with the auction transaction, it could be much more difficult if the seller is located outside the US because of the difference in laws.
    • Ask the seller about when delivery can be expected and if there is a problem with the merchandise is it covered by a warranty or can you exchange it.
    • Find out if shipping and delivery are included in the auction price or are additional costs so there are no unexpected costs.
    • There should be no reason to give out your social security number or drivers license number to the seller.

    Outlook as a Service

Many people use Microsoft Outlook Express for email.  This is the Windows built-in "free" email application.  While "OE" is an easy to use email application,  big brother "Outlook" is much more robust offering calendars, appointments, schedulable tasks and more.  Outlook can be purchased as a separate application but comes with all Microsoft Office suites.

In a large corporate setting, Outlook in combination with an Exchange Server is very powerful, offering "company wide calendars", "public folders" and shared resources including meeting room scheduling and the like.

Want Outlook and the power offered by Exchange Server without the huge expense?  Microsoft is now offering Outlook as an on-line service.  However the details are somewhat sketchy to us.  More information, visit the Outlook Live site.

    On a High-Speed Connection?

See just how "high-speed" it really is.  According to DSL Reports, industry wide can expect to see something around 13% "loss" from the rated speed e.g., if you are paying for a 256 connection you can expect to see something around 223 as a download speed and half that for uploading.  Upload (sending) speed is typically 1/2 the download speed.

However, in our area the loss is more like 20% or net speed of about 205. But progressive losses?  We see an average of 550 down (350 up) on our 768 connection.  That is more in the area of a 29% loss...

    Test yours: http://speedtest.connections-etc.com/

In fact, we would be interested in your results.  Write us with your "paid" service speed and test results speed.

    Dialup Connections

Getting disconnected, or when connected you have a poor connection speed?  This may be caused by the modem attempting to connect at maximum speed when your phone lines cannot handle that speed.  The result is a poor or terribly slow connection.  Try controlling the modem connection speed rather than allowing it to (attempt to) connect at a maximum speed.  Click here for more information.

    Auto-Dial

By default Norton will attempt to connect to the Internet every four hours to check for updates. On a dialup connection, that means LiveUpdate will bring up the dialer (see Symantec article 2001052115543206).  Short of disabling auto updates (you do NOT want to do that), there is nothing that can be done to change this.

    Infinity (and Beyond...)

For a couple years, the industry roughly doubled the speed of computers while dropping the price by 50% which was great for the consumer!  But as computer power increased software manufacturers realized the potential of these new computers and wrote the software requiring a "high end" computer.

If you want some of the new "3-D" games you may be surprised your "new" computer will not even run them!  Some games are now requiring a minimum of a 2.4 GHz Pentium processor, some require a minimum of 512 Ram (memory)

That processor speed became common with most machines built within the last two years but until very recently, 512 was unheard of except in specially built computers.

    What's in your PC?

To find the processor speed and amount of Ram:  Control Panel > System icon (or right click My Computer > Properties) and near the bottom of the General tab is the information.

That, by the way, is also where you can see what Windows version (operating system) you are running.

    Video Capability

Another issue you need to look at is the display/video capability!  Most "integrated video" will not have the necessary power to run these new games.

If you are running Windows 98 or better; from the Start menu select Run then type msinfo32 and press enter.  From the system information's Tools menu, select DirectX Diagnostic Tool.  Click to the Display tab and there you will find your video card information including the amount of video memory.  But making sense of all that information is yet another story...  More information

    Recommendation:

Before you buy a game, gather the information about your computer then visit the game manufacturer's support/requirement site, perhaps even write them with that information and ask if their game will run.

"Gamers" may want to read this article.

    Backing up Outlook Express

Need to backup Outlook Express?  Microsoft has a fairly good article on the subject.

    Dear Dr. Mike:

I need your advice. I've suspected for some time now that my wife was having an affair. We get a lot of "hang up" phone calls. She spends lots of nights out "with the girls." When I ask, "Which girls?" she always answers, "Oh, just work friends; you don't know them." Once when I grabbed her cell phone to check the time, she screamed that I should never touch her phone again. But I never approached the subject with her; deep down, I guess I just couldn't handle the truth.

But last night, when she went out again, I decided to follow her. When she went inside this other house, I hid behind her car so I could see inside. While crouched behind the car, I noticed rust in the right rear fender. Should I try to fix it myself or take it to a body repair shop?

    Waiting in anguish,

    Martin

Hey, don't blame me for these, let Al Lowe know
