Router settings

Because there are so many manufacturers and models, we cannot give the exact steps for each...  Hopefully you can figure out your settings from this information.

First you need to determine your router's IP address.  For almost everyone needing this information, that will be the "gateway" address found in your network configuration.  Here's how how to find that:

Windows XP press the Windows key and "R" or from the Start menu select Run and in the box, type cmd then click OK

Windows Vista and 7 are basically the same but rather than seeing "Run" under the Start menu, simply type cmd in the box that appears just above the Start menu then press Enter, or use the Windows key and "R".

At the prompt (in the black box) type
ipconfig /all
then press Enter

Locate the Default Gateway line and record the numbers.

In our example that is 192.168.2.99

Next, open the Internet browser and in the address bar (not in a searchbar), type in the IP address then Enter.

If everything is correct, that will open the router interface and ask you to log on.  Default logons are:

  • Netgear:  User = admin, password = password
  • Linksys:   User = nothing (leave it blank), password = admin
  • Check your documentation or with the manufacturer for other brands or if you have problems...

Once you have logged on, look for basic settings and/or DNS settings.  Add or change the DNS server address to:

69.66.0.20  and  69.66.1.20

Below are some examples where to find the DNS fields...

In most Linksys routers the DNS settings are in the first page after logging in...  Be sure to click the Save or Apply button when done...

In most Netgear routers the DNS settings are found in the Basic Settings page.  Be sure to click the Save or Apply button when done...

Other routers look for "DNS" or "WAN" settings...
